The Pittsburgh Penguins were founded in 1967 as one of the NHL’s first expansion teams. From 1967 to 2010, Pittsburgh Penguins Ticket Holders flocked to the Civic Arena, nicknamed “the Igloo,” to root for their team. After finding moderate success in the early years, the Penguins drafted Mario Lemieux in 1984, who was an instant offensive force on the ice and would become one of the greatest players in the history of the game. As the club drafted other standout players, the Penguins became a regular presence in the play-offs in the late 1980s. After the addition of superstar right wing Jaromir Jagr, the Pittsburgh Penguins finally became champions, winning the Stanley Cup in 1991 and 1992.

The Pittsburgh Penguins remained competitive after those early 1990s victories; however a third Stanley Cup win wouldn’t come until 2009. A fourth Stanley Cup win came in 2016 and the team rode the momentum to their fifth Stanley Cup in 2017. With those recent wins, the Pittsburgh Penguins became the first back-to-back champions since the Detroit Red Wings accomplished the same feat 1998.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have a huge rivalry with cross-state franchise, the Philadelphia Flyers.
